Contrary to what many believe, adult circumcisions are quite common. Besides religious reasons, there are often personal reasons to get circumcised, and if you have been considering the option, you must know that it is an elective procedure. In other words, your health insurance may not cover the costs. Talk to a Circumcision Urologist Brooklyn to understand the costs and relevant aspects. The total expense depends on several factors, but the urologist or surgeon can give you a detailed estimate. In this post, we are sharing more about what to expect during the procedure.

    The procedure

Newborns are usually circumcised within ten days of birth. The procedure of circumcision involves injecting an anesthetic into the base of the penis, following which the doctor secures the penis with a claim and removes the foreskin. The penis is wrapped with gauze, and appropriate ointment is applied. The entire procedure is usually completed within 30 minutes. Adult circumcisions are similar, except that the patient may need general anesthesia, and the recovery time is considerably longer in comparison.

    Recovery and more

It can take up to 10 days to heal after an adult circumcision. There can be some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, and your doctor will usually prescribe antibiotics during the recovery period. You may find that the penis tip is sore and appear irritated and red. Once the penis heals, washing it is okay, and you can usually apply petroleum jelly to the tip. If you are caring for a baby who has been circumcised, follow the doctor’s advice, and it is essential to change diapers regularly. As an adult, you should wear loose-fitting briefs and avoid sexual activities for at least two to four weeks.

    When to see a doctor?

While circumcision-related complications are not that common, you should see a doctor if you don’t urinate within 12 hours of the procedure. If a plastic ring was placed and didn’t move within two weeks of circumcision, you should ask for help. Also, don’t delay seeking medical attention if you have an unusual discharge or extreme bleeding from the penis. While circumcision is safe for adults, there are inherent risks that are worth discussing in advance.

    Final word

Adult circumcision is often done for cosmetic reasons alone. If you have questions or want to understand the benefits and risks better, choose a clinic with good reviews and schedule an appointment. When an experienced surgeon or urologist does the job, there is little to worry about.
