Early Life and Childhood
Jhulan Goswami was born in a middle-class family on 25 November 1982 in Chakdaha, West Bengal, India, to Nisith Goswami and Jharna Goswami. She started playing the game at a later stage after watching the legendary Australian batter, Belinda Clark, in the Women’s Cricket World Cup held in 1997. At the age of 15, she used to travel back and forth from Kolkata to Chakdaha to train at a cricket academy in the capital of West Bengal, as there was no available facility in their hometown.
Cricketing Career
Goswami used to play for the Bengali women’s team post-completion of her training at the Kolkata academy. Jhulan Goswami played her first ODI match for the Indian team at the age of 19 on 4 January 2002, against the English team at Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai. In the second ODI match, she took 3 wickets for just 8 runs in the 5 overs she bowled and helped the Indian team register an easy win against England. Also, in the same series, Goswami made her Test debut. She played her first international Test match against England at the K.D. Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow.
Jhulan Goswami played a crucial role in helping the Indian women’s team register a series victory against the English women’s team in the 2006-2007 tour. She bowled brilliant and long spells and even contributed with the bat by scoring a vital half-century. Goswami took 10 wickets in both the Test matches, occurring in Leicester and Taunton. She was appointed the captain of the Indian women’s team in 2008. In the same year, she achieved 100 wickets in One-Day International cricket, becoming the fourth person to do so. And after 3 years and captaining 25 ODI matches, Jhulan Goswami was let go of her captaincy. She became the recipient of the Arjuna award and the Padma Shri award in 2010 and 2012, respectively.
After years of consistent performances, Goswami finally achieved the record for being the highest wicket-taker in Women’s One Day Internationals in a match against the South African women’s team. In the year 2017, she was part of India’s women’s squad for the World Cup for women’s cricket. She bowled excellently and took her team to the finals before losing to the English women’s team that had the advantage of home ground.
In the year 2018, Jhulan Goswami created many records in women’s cricket. She became the first woman to take 200 wickets in One Day Internationals and also became the only player to achieve 300 wickets in women’s international cricket.
Jhulan Goswami has been a part of many Women’s Cricket World Cups, be it WT20I or WODI. She has not been particularly successful in WT20I cricket. In the 2016 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup, she played three matches and took no wickets. Similarly, in the 2016 Women’s Asia Cup, which was held in the T20 format, Goswami was only able to take five wickets even though India’s women’s team were crowned the champions of the tournament. And again, in the 2018 version of the Women’s Asia Cup, which was again played in the T20 format, she managed to take only a single wicket out of all the matches she was able to play. This led to her being dropped from the 2018 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup held in the West Indies and also from the 2020 Women’s T20 Cricket World held in Australia.
Current Performance
After the game was back again and played in safe environments due to the pandemic, Jhulan Goswami played in the 5-match ODI series against the South African women’s team in India.
